Poisoning the Greenkeeper.
“A Greenkeeper has just accused his colleague of poisoning him. What shall we do now?”
This is the absolute corker of a client question this year so far, by miles!
And here’s the story…

No, is the short answer to that.
There is a right to be accompanied by a (current) colleague or trade union representative.
Staff do not need to be a TU member to have a TU rep there (they can call in favours or rent one from a London law firm).
If you only have a few staff, you could consider allowing them to bring a friend or family member. But they have no legal right to have them there.
There are circumstances when employees can bring a solicitor to an official meeting, but redundancy is not one of them.

There.
I’ve said it.
Am I allowed – as an employment law expert – to say that?
Aren’t I supposed to pretend that this is all perfectly reasonable?
I’ll be honest with you, there are some processes in employment law that make me want to bang my head against a brick wall.
And I can understand that the convoluted processes that we all have to go through will sometimes sound like a magic potion recipe:

I am very proud to be sponsoring the prestigious GCMA Team of the Year award this year.
And you know what? I get to do a fun road trip as well!
Yesterday I went to the very sunny wilds of Wales to assess Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, finalists in the award. Very serious assessment was done (see below!)
One of the best perks of sponsoring the award is that I am doing the road trip with one of my favourite clients, Peter Hickling at High Post. His team won the award 2 years ago and he gets to scrutinise the new contenders this time around.
We’re off to Norwood Park Golf Club today, fingers crossed for equally good weather!

This keeps coming up as a staff issue, so I thought you would be interested in this article about how to deal with smelly bods!
Bad body odour is the most disliked personal hygiene problem – 70% of employees say it’s their top bugbear.
If you receive a complaint about someone’s BO, what’s the best way to tackle it?

Well it’s fair to say I got some interesting responses from Friday’s email.
To jog your memory, I told the story of a club who had £1,500 go missing from the safe, with the last person to see it an employee who was cashing up.
And the question was: what’s the right course of action?
Disciplinary? No disciplinary? Get the police involved? Talk to their relatives?
