Why do UK Golf Clubs need this book?
95% of my clients start working with me because they want or need to get rid of one of their current members of staff. And of the other 5%, the question of how to part company with non-performers comes up in the first month of working together.
Once we have got rid of the staff that are a thorn in the golf club’s side, we then move on to how we manage the existing staff better. There is often another round of parting company as staff are unable or unwilling to respond to clearer performance objectives.
Recruiting staff & moving forward
And finally, once the dust has settled, we look to recruit new staff, ones with a better attitude and skills, who want to do the job well and don’t have the baggage that longer-serving staff sometimes have.
One of the most common statements I hear is “He/she is a lovely person, but … ” and it invariably leads on to a statement about poor attitude or poor performance. I would always rather have poor performance, as that can often be rectified by clarity of tasks or more training. Attitude is a lot trickier.
The question also shows that golf clubs are really not cold heartless employers. You give staff second, third and sometimes many more chances to do it right. To the extent that some staff really do take advantage of you. There are tools out there for employers to use, but many golf clubs shy away from doing measures such as disciplinaries as they don’t want to be seen as “heavy handed”.
Looking at your golf club objectively
This is where I come in. I help the clubs look at the situation more objectively and see what needs to be done for the club and the staff who are performing well, rather than the “lovely person” who just isn’t doing what is needed.
So with all these challenges, the very least I can help with is how to manage your staff issues, so that they cause the minimum of disturbance and are solved so that you can concentrate on the more important things in life.
I will help you get back on course and keep you out of the rough with your staff issues, and this book is the first step towards that!
