“…there were quite a few questions and at times the meeting with employees had the potential to get heated, However, impressively Carolyne took it all in her stride and was extremely level-headed and professional. “
Club secretary Ian Symington decided it was time to get Golf HR on board after being impressed by Carolyne’s “enthusiasm and common-sense” during a presentation she gave to GCMA members.
“At the time I was very much aware that I needed to bring our staff contracts up to 20th century standards, never mind 21st,” joked Ian. “At the time of meeting Carolyne our contracts were roughly one side of A4 and around 10 rudimentary observations. Some of them went back to 1979, with the most recent around five years old.
“I sent them to Carolyne who said she’d mark what needed to be done in terms of the traffic light system, with red being ‘no’ and green ‘fine.’ When I got them back there was a substantial amount of red and very little green.”
Royal West Norfolk – a links course which sits between the North Sea on one side and a salt marsh on the other – is ranked 17th favourite in England.
They currently employ 15 permanent staff and four individuals on zero hour contracts. Once the new contracts had been drawn up, Carolyne was invited to introduce them to staff. “As you can imagine there were quite a few questions and at times the meeting with employees had the potential to get heated,” said Ian. “However, impressively Carolyne took it all in her stride and was extremely level-headed and professional. “
Golf HR also came to Ian’s assistance when a former member of staff who’d recently taken redundancy complained of bullying by a former boss. He’d never had a grievance issue until that point.
“Carolyne isn’t particularly perturbed about it all, explaining that it will simply run its course. I’m taking my cue from her. In the past I’d probably have turned to a local solicitor to help sort out the issue for me. That would have been a lot more expensive. I like the fact that with Golf HR you know exactly how much it’s going to cost upfront.”
Ian said his experience with Golf HR is exactly what he presumed it would be.
“I’m very happy with the service I’ve been receiving,” he said. “It’s exactly what I was hoping for. They’re obviously an extremely experienced HR company and it’s one I’ll definitely be keeping on.”
